TCID50 Guide
Reed-Muench vs Spearman-Karber for TCID50
A short comparison of Reed-Muench and Spearman-Karber methods for endpoint dilution TCID50 calculations.
Reed-Muench
The Reed-Muench method interpolates around the 50 percent endpoint. It is widely used because the calculation steps are transparent and easy to review against a dilution table.
Spearman-Karber
The Spearman-Karber method estimates the endpoint from the dilution series as a whole. It is useful when the assay design matches the method assumptions and the dilution steps are consistent.
Practical Choice
Many labs keep one method as the protocol standard and use the other as a cross-check. BioCalculator supports both methods so the same endpoint dilution data can be reviewed without rebuilding spreadsheet formulas.
